The region of Meknes carries the most important vineyard of Morocco (3,000 ha) and concentrates 60% of the national production. The vineyards extend along the coastal chain, along the coast and at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Benefiting from maritime and continental influences, the vines are planted at high altitude (600 -700 m) on sandy and clayey-limestone soils.
Inherited from the colonial period, the dominant grape variety includes Mediterranean plants. However, other imported varieties have gained ground, mainly Bordeaux grape varieties, while Syrah has become very popular. Local production is framed by imposing structures that are generally supplied by independent winegrowers.
Known for its winemaking skills, the Meknes region is home to three appellations of origin, including that of Guerrouane.
