Barolo and Barbaresco are small DOGC denominations. They cover only a few hectares and are located on both sides of the city of Alba, in northwestern Italy.
The nebbiolo, an old and noble Piedmontese grape variety, is the only grape variety of the Barolo and Barbaresco wines. It takes its name from the mist (nebbia) that covers the hills of Italian Piedmont in autumn. The Barbaresco region, located a little further south, enjoys a slightly warmer climate than its neighbor. The grapes ripen earlier and the wines can be a little softer than the barolo.
As in Burgundy, producers have identified crus, specific terroirs whose names may appear on the label. Some of them are well known, such as Bricco Asili and Sori Tildin in Barbaresco, among many others.
