Tourists are sometimes surprised to discover that there is wine production in Morocco. Today it is the red wine which is the most prized. It represents moreover 74% of the local consumption. This drink supplants the strong alcohols such as whisky on Moroccan tables and a true red wine culture is established, although it is estimated that local consumption is 1 liter of wine per capita per year.
The majority of vineyards and red wine producers are located in the regions of Berkane, Tiflet, Meknes, Benslimane, Essaouira and Casablanca. They are produced from Grenache, Cabernet and Cinsault grapes. And the best known red wines are Boualaouane, Château Roslane, César, Cuvée Président, Terre rouge, El Mogador, Guerrouane, Volubilia, Merlot, Sauvignon or Syrah varietal wines, or Gérard Depardieu's Lumière.
Like most North African wines, Moroccan red wines are full-bodied and have a very pronounced taste of the terroir, such as that of Château Amjad, made from Grenache and Syrah grapes.
