Over the last decade, Argentina has gone from a little-known country on the world wine scene to the fastest growing wine exporter in the New World. The leading grape variety in Argentina in terms of reputation and quantity is Malbec, a Bordeaux grape variety imported from France to Argentina in the mid-19th century. Among the white wines, the emblematic grape variety of the Argentinean wine region is Torrontés, which gives a floral wine with a tropical taste. The country also produces Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio.
There are seven Argentine wine regions: Mendoza, Salta, Neuquén, Rio Negro, Catamarca, La Rioja and San Juan. Among these, Mendoza is the leader in terms of quantity and quality, with about 80% of the country's wine production centered in this desert region located almost directly across the Andes from Santiago, and about 650 miles west of Buenos Aires.
