This village of the Haut-Vaucluse perched on a hill of 200 meters, stands in front of the Dentelles de Montmirail. The vineyard, relatively sheltered from the Mistral wind, is planted on very varied soils, with a very uneven relief, allowing the production of dry red wines with a strong typicity. Thanks to the quality of this production and the dynamism of the winegrowers, the AOC Rasteau was awarded the rank of Cru des Côtes du Rhône in 2010. Rasteau is also known for its production of Vin Doux Naturel.
In this AOC, wines must contain a minimum of 50% Grenache. Grenache Noir is the king grape variety of the Rasteau vineyard. It is a vigorous variety, resistant to wind and drought. It is perfectly adapted to the terroir of Rasteau and its well exposed, not very fertile and dry hillsides. Made from old vines, it produces heady, structured wines with aromas of ripe fruit and spices. Grenache is combined with Syrah and Mourvèdre to obtain balanced wines. Syrah, originally from the northern Côtes du Rhône crus, is more recently introduced in Rasteau.
It gives wines with an intense color, fine and complex, with notes of black fruits, violets and spices.
