Cariñena is a Denominación de Origen (DO) produced in the province of Zaragoza. It is the oldest denomination of the Autonomous Community of Aragon, and one of the oldest in Spain. It is located 50 kilometers from Zaragoza, south of the Ebro river, in the county of Campo de Cariñena.
The terroir of Cariñena consists of reddish limestone on layers of calcium carbonate rocks and, in places, slate and clay. The climate is continental with great thermal variations.
The most common grape variety is Grenache Noir (55%), used for making red wines, followed by Mazuelo and Tempranillo (15%) .
