Uruguay's vineyards are located at the same latitudes as those of its Argentinean and Chilean neighbors. The Canelones vineyards cover 10,000 hectares and produce approximately one million hectoliters, and the climate is oceanic. The climate is oceanic, with a climate close to that of Europe, which allows for the production of wines that appeal to European customers. The summer period is not marked by drought. This type of climate can be compared to that of Bordeaux. The vineyards are mainly located north and northwest of Montevideo where the Rio de la Plata brings moderate heat.
Tannat, well acclimatized to local conditions has become the emblematic grape variety of this country. It produces powerful wines with tannins that require a few years of refinement. There are also Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese for red wines.
