It is through the sumptuous valley of Hemel-en-Aarde that the Hermanus Wine Route winds its way. Directly translated from the Afrikaans Hemel-en-Aarde means "heaven and earth" and, certainly for those who live there, the valley is often described as, literally, paradise on earth.
The fynbos-covered hills, overlooked by a series of towering Cape Mountains and swept by winds from the Atlantic Ocean, are home to some fifteen vineyards, each cultivating relatively small volumes of grapes to produce individual and excellent wines.
The vineyards are large on pinot noir for red wine. If praise and awards are anything to go by, this valley has had more than its fair share of this particular red wine grape variety. For some reason, the Hemel-en-Aarde valley is one of the few regions outside of Burgundy where it grows so well. The quality of their Chardonnay, especially in the upper Hemel-en-Aarde valley, is so good.
