The Montsant Designation of Origin was created in 2001 with the intention of bringing together the distinctive features vof a group of wineries that already formed a sub-section of the Tarragona Designation of Origin. It is therefore a recent Denomination of Origin, which includes more than fifty wineries.
The climate of the area is continental, with significant temperature differences between day and night, which influences the ripening of the grapes. The cultivated vines are characterized by a rather moderate yield. This specificity has contributed to make these wines particularly appreciated.
They are mainly red wines for ageing, that is to say, they spend a certain amount of time in barrels before being bottled with cariñena (mazuelo), black grenache and hairy grenache varieties.
